2026 update

“We have to grow club football all over the world.” Gianni Infantino’s words when he addressed FIFA Diploma in Club Management candidates in Doha, Qatar, in December 2024 not only summarised the aims of the organisation, but the essence of the strategy that brought the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup into being in 2025, and will see an equivalent version for the women’s game come online in 2028.

Botafogo de Futbol e Regatas were crowned winners of the CONMEBOL Libertadores at the end of November 2024 and, in lifting the trophy in Argentina, earned the 32nd and final spot in the inaugural men’s tournament. Within a week, their name was in the final draw for the tournament in Miami, United States, during a ceremony that highlighted FIFA’s mission of making football – for club and country – truly global.

The draw ceremony included the first glimpse of the beautiful and innovative new trophy that was presented to Chelsea FC, the first winners of the new tournament on 13 July 2025 in New York New Jersey. The game against European champions Paris Saint-Germain was – like all 63 matches at the tournament – globally accessible after a landmark free-to-view agreement was signed on the eve of the final tournament draw with the world’s largest streaming platform, DAZN.

Ahead of the action on the pitch, the trophy started its worldwide tour at The Landmark, Tiffany & Co.’s iconic flagship store on New York’s Fifth Avenue in January 2025. The departure event was attended by over 200 special guests including presidents, CEOs and representatives from participating clubs, FIFA’s commercial and media partners, including DAZN, Tiffany & Co.’s leadership, and included a headline performance from music icon Robbie Williams. It then made its way to Lisbon, where it wowed fans of SL Benfica on the first of its visits to all 32 participating clubs.

Meanwhile, FIFA continues to maintain an annual club competition for men’s clubs that features each confederation’s continental champion. Real Madrid C.F. lifted the first FIFA Intercontinental Cup at Doha’s Lusail Stadium on 18 December 2024 with a 3-0 success over Concacaf title holders CF Pachuca while European kings Paris defeated South American counterparts Clube de Regatas do Flamengo in the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Qatar to win the 2025 edition.

Goal 10 overview

Given FIFA’s statutory objective to organise its own international competitions, a significant new opportunity has been created that provides a global and inclusive format for club football involving participants from all continents. The new FIFA Club World Cup will ensure that FIFA will deliver a global event for club football, helping to make football truly global. Plans are also being formulated for an equivalent tournament for women’s club football.
